Beware bad guys - a new high-performance police SUV could soon be on your tail.
Next time you check your rear-view mirror, a Dodge Durango police SUV could be on your tail. Dodge has announced the Durango Pursuit is joining its police fleet alongside the current . The police-spec SUV should have no problem keeping up with fleeing criminals thanks to its 5.7-liter V8 under the hood that generates 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. The V8 unit is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox with quick shifts and an active full-time AWD system.
It’s essentially the same powertrain combination found in the Dodge Charger Pursuit, which is the top-selling police sedan in the US market. The police SUV is also equipped with a two-speed transfer case for true low-range off-road capability and beefier brakes than the standard R/T Durango that deliver a 60-0 mph stopping distance of 134 feet. It also has a perfect 50:50 weight balance, while an under-vehicle mount for the spare tire maximizes interior cargo space and accessibility. With 8.1 inches of ground clearance and 7,200 lbs towing capability, the Durango Pursuit should be able to handle any task both on and off the road.
A segment-leading wheelbase of 119.8 inches provides added stability and improved handling. Standard equipment in the Durango Pursuit includes an eight-way power adjustable driver seat, air conditioning with air filtration, parking camera, three-zone climate control, and trailer sway control. “Unofficial testing results at the Michigan State Police 2018 model-year vehicle evaluation event created such a stir among law enforcement agencies that we simply had to find a way to build this vehicle,” said Steve Beahm, Head of Passenger Car Cars at FCA North America.
“The Dodge Durango is already known as the Charger of SUVs, so it is only natural that the new Durango Pursuit complements the Charger Pursuit in police fleets across the country.” According to Dodge, the Durango Pursuit is available to order for a limited time only. If you’re jealous of the new high-performance pursuit SUV, don’t be because a powerful Durango SRT was introduced to the 2018 lineup for the first time, packing a 6.4-liter V8 that delivers 475 hp and 470 lb-ft.
