If the most recent rumor is to be believed.
All of the affordable electric car hype is currently surrounding the Tesla Model 3 but the momentum will soon shift to Tesla's next affordable car, the Model Y crossover. We don't know much about the Model Y so far, other than it will likely .
Tesla has but the image gives us very little to go off of. Even though Tesla is keeping information about the Model Y very close to the chest, claims to have obtained leaked information from "a little birdie" about the upcoming model.
According to The Tesla Show, the Model Y will be all-wheel-drive-only, have a $35,000 to $40,000 base price, possess a 250-plus range, ship with Autopilot version 3.5 and additional cameras, and include full Level 4 autonomous driving capability. None of these details have been made official by Tesla, so we have to take them with a grain of salt.
If these rumors do turn out to be true, Tesla could have yet another smash hit on its hands. In fact, with the growing popularity of crossovers, we believe the Model Y has the potential to outsell the Model 3 when it finally arrives.
Tesla still hasn't started building the $35,000 Model 3, so it is interesting to hear that the Model Y may initially be available at such a low price point. The Model Y is rumored to be on the same platform as the Model 3, which would save money in development costs and enable a lower selling price.
We are also a bit skeptical of the Level 4 autonomy claims. Tesla CEO, but Autopilot still can't navigate traffic lights and stop signs. If the rumors of a November production date are true, we should hear more details about the Model Y at some point later this year.
