This gives us a few clues of what the new WRX STI will look like in 2020.
After giving us a sneak preview earlier in the week, Subaru has lifted the wraps off the new Viziv Performance STI Concept at the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon. If it looks familiar, that's because it's based on the original Viziv Performance Concept unveiled last year at the Tokyo Motor Show. Essentially, this concept sport sedan serves as a preview for the all-new Subaru WRX STI expected to arrive possibly in 2020. Compared to its less sporty sibling, the STI Concept has had some subtle styling changes to give the car a more aggressive appearance.
Its large rear wing, however, is anything but subtle, which of course is a signature design feature of the production WRX STI.Other changes include a tweaked rear diffuser made from carbon fiber, new side sills, and restyled front bumper with larger air intakes and STI branding as a homage to old WRX STI models. Elsewhere, red accents applied to the exterior indicate that this is the hot version of the WRX. Subaru has previously said that the styling of the next WRX will be inspired by the Viziv Performance Concept, so the same should be true for the STI model. That said, the automaker has a habit of watering down the designs of its concepts when they enter production, so we hope that isn't the case here.
No powertrain details have been provided by Subaru yet, but rumors suggest that the WRX's 2.5-liter unit will be replaced with a smaller 2.0-liter boxer and an electric motor to create a hybrid powertrain linked to an all-wheel drive system.
