Will the 2018 Mercedes GLA faclift make its mark in the crowded crossover market?
Ahead of its planned reveal in , Mercedes has released a teaser image of its upcoming facelift for the 2018 GLA crossover’s mid-cycle upgrade. While the image has been darkened, there are some notable cosmetic changes compared to the current model: the BMW X1-rivaling crossover sports a new grille with black slats, the headlights have been slimmed down and a new bumper has been fitted to incorporate fog lights in contrast to the side grilles that graced the previous model.
Mercedes has so far only shown off the front of the GLA facelift, but you would expect to find similar tweaks applied to the rear such as a new bumper and revised taillights, as well as new alloy wheel options. As part of Mercedes' "fitness program," these changes will make the GLA more closely resemble the car it’s based on, the regular . As for the interior, the 2018 GLA will include Apple Carplay and Android Auto integration as part of the GLA’s infotainment system, as well as a redesigned touchscreen. Expect the usual vast array of interior trim options and extras to complete the 2018 GLA’s visual overhaul.
While the European model will be available with a wide variety of engine options, the US version shown in the image will only be available with a choice of a turbocharged 2.0-liter with 208 horsepower, or the beefier AMG 2.0-liter that churns out 375 hp. The former will be fitted to the and its all-wheel-drive GLA250 4Matic counterpart, whereas the latter is reserved for the AWD-only, range-topping GLA45. Whether Mercedes can make its mark in the with the 2017 GLA remains to be seen, but all will be revealed at the Detroit Auto Show next week.
