There's nothing else like it on the road.
RM Sothebys recently estimated this stunning 1997 Porsche 911 GT1 Evolution , and over the weekend it was snapped up for a smidgen less with one lucky anonymous buyer , or $3,133,220. While it may not look it, this race car is actually road legal, as indicated by the “P1 POW” registration on the back. It’s the only ex-racing GT1 Evo to ever be made road legal, plus it just so happens to be the most decorated racing car ever made.
Power comes from a 3.2-liter twin-turbo flat-six rated at 600-640 hp, and while the goal was to match the McLaren F1 GTR’s sub-1,000kg weight, Porsche decided that adding weight would allow for a larger air intake and in turn, more horsepower. The 911 GT1 was a purpose-built sports racing car built from the ground up. Essentially a racing prototype, it incorporated the majority of the Type 993’s front end, albeit with a double wishbone suspension. The rear end was all new, the sleek carbon-fiber body was matched with honeycomb and aluminum composite floorpan and bulkheads, while the engine sits amidships behind the driver’s compartment in order to maximize ground effects with a rear diffuser.
A total of just 41 GT1s were ever made, making it one of the rarest of all Porsche racing cars. This particular chassis was sold as a bare tub to Bytzek Motorsports in 1997, who installed the drivetrain and suspension from a damaged 1996 chassis, before adding more components and the Evo upgrade package. After an impressive 13 wins in 31 starts, including a trio of Canadian GT Championships from 1999-2001, the car was fully restored in 2014-2015, appearing at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2015.
