Thank God, am I right?
Infiniti announced it will develop a purpose built electric vehicle platform which will draw inspiration from one of the company’s prettiest concept cars, as the automaker attempts to position itself for the future. Company Chairman and Global President, Roland Krueger, made the announcement at a Beijing Motor Show preview event. Infiniti announced the first car based on the new platform would be heavily influenced by the Q Inspiration Concept the brand trotted out at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit earlier this year.
"Infiniti is developing a new platform for electrified vehicles inspired by the Q Inspiration concept car, which shows the new design language for the age of autonomy and electrification,” said Krueger. “We very much had China in mind when designing the Q Inspiration, which shows a very sporty, performance-oriented electric concept, with a much bigger interior space." However, it housed Infiniti’s new variable-compression gas engine under the hood which won’t feature, for obvious reasons. Allegedly though, the concept is a beacon of what to expect from the company’s forthcoming design language.
Infiniti is planning to base at least five vehicles on its new electric platform, all of which will be built in China. The product mix is expected to feature both fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles and the platform will be designed from the outset around the unique constraints and opportunities that come from incorporating batteries and electric motors. But it’s not just that, Infiniti says advanced powertrains will liberate it’s army of designers from the constraints of traditional powertrain architectures, which will in turn will allow them to realize all kinds of incredible new ideas about what makes an ideal interior.
