Hyundai Grandmaster Concept Could Preview Future Flagship SUV

Rumors suggest Hyundai is developing a new full-size SUV to slot above the Sante Fe - and this is what it could look like.

At this year’s Geneva Motor Show, Hyundai previewed its bold new “Sensuous Sportiness" design language with the , which will be applied to every future model. Three months later, Hyundai has unveiled a new concept at the Busan Motor Show. Dubbed the HDC-2 Grandmaster, it takes the form of a full-size SUV and adopts the same design language as the Le Fil Rogue sedan. Details are scarce, but the SUV concept looks incredibly imposing with its massive cascading grille and large wheels.

Hyundai says it was designed with a focus on four key elements: proportion, architecture, styling and technology. The concept’s name is derived from the game of chess - Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can attain in the World Chess Championship. “Today we showcased the HDC-2 concept vehicle as a blueprint for our evolved design strategy,” said Hyundai design chief SangYup Lee. “Making a big step forward in terms of design with the Hyundai Look strategy, we will move towards becoming a brand that customers can really relate to emotionally. Moving on from being a brand that provides a great value, we will aspire to also become a brand that is widely beloved by our customers.”

Chances are the Grandmaster concept is previewing a future flagship Hyundai SUV that will slot above the seven-seat Santa Fe XL launching next year. It will most likely ride on the same platform as the upcoming Kia Telluride, and could be called the Palisade if a is anything to go by. At the Busan Motor Show, Hyundai also announced the expansion of its N performance brand. No specific details were revealed, but it sounds like we can look forward to more N performance models in the future.
