797 horsepower would be almost as much as the Demon's 808.
With , muscle-car fans have been wondering what SRT might be cooking up next for the Dodge Challenger. And the answer, it seems, is the RED797. Just what is the RED797? We don't know yet, but we can take a guess or two. Though it's hard to make much out from the video, it looks to be sporting the that Dodge teased (in blue) for the Challenger last month. And we like the sound of it – both from the exhaust note, and from the suggestion of what that number could stand for.
Since its launch ten years ago, Dodge has installed incrementally larger and more powerful engines in the rude and crude Challenger. Where the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 (producing 375 horsepower) in the Challenger R/T would be more than enough for most, the 6.1-liter, 425-hp version in the SRT8 was – in muscle-car terms – even better.
That in turn was replaced by the SRT 392, displacing 6.4 liters and kicking out 485 hp. Then came the Hellcat with a supercharged 6.2 good for 707 hp, and of course the Demon with 808. If the 797 designation, as this teaser video ostensibly suggests, represents the next top Challenger's power rating, it would mean a slight drop in output... but not by much. And if SRT can make it a little more accessible – both in terms of price and all-around performance off the drag strip – we think we might be able to swallow an eleven-horse penalty. As to when we might actually see the thing, Fiat Chrysler's only saying that the RED 797 is “coming soon.” Here's hoping that means really soon.
